USB's SoyBoom.com Helps Health Professionals Serve Baby Boomers

Baby Boomers, the 77 million Americans currently between the ages of 45 and 63, are the largest generation in American history.  Health professionals expect demand for healthcare to increase rapidly over the next ten years as this population ages.

Educating patients about healthy lifestyle choices, including nutrition, will be a critical part of helping patients prevent disease and protect overall wellness, while also creating product development opportunities for Boomer-oriented functional foods. Research has shown soy may positively impact health in ways particularly important to Boomers, including reducing the risk of heart disease, preventing some cancers and the alleviating menopause symptoms.

The United Soybean Board (USB) recently launched SoyBoom.com, a go-to health and wellness resource designed to help health professionals educate their clients and patients about the health benefits of soy. The site discusses health topics important to Boomers, including everyday health challenges and chronic diseases.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is especially critical for people in their late 50s and early 60s to concentrate on disease prevention. "Controlling high blood pressure and obesity is crucial for health, and particularly for baby boomers as they grow older," notes Mike Leavitt, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

SoyBoom.com suggests ways health professionals can recommend Boomers incorporate soy into their favorite foods. Visitors can download recipes and a soyfoods shopping list to simplify grocery trips. USB’s Healthy Community forum provides an opportunity for health professionals to chat with colleagues on hot topics relevant to Boomer health concerns.

SoyBoom.com was unveiled to dietitians at the American Dietetic Association’s Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo in October 2008.
