- The reported prevalence of sarcopenia in the United States is 22.6% and 26.8% for women and men, respectively. Several pathophysiological mechanisms have been associated with the etiology of sarcopenia, from decreased physical activity, to disruption in the regulation of muscle protein turnover. Like other age-related conditions, sarcopenia has the potential to be mitigated by a healthy lifestyle and diet. Snacks, especially those composed of nutrient-dense foods, can be an important part of a person’s diet. Snacking helps spread total daily calories across the day, which in turn can help keep blood sugar under control.
