FDA Heart Health Claims
Soyfoods and soybean oil are important to heart health. The FDA recognized the cholesterol-lowering effects of soy protein and soybean oil, confirming they may be able to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
Soybean Protein Health Claim
Soy protein’s health claim was issued in 1999. It states: “25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.”
Soybean Oil Health Claim
Soybean oil’s health claim was issued in 2017. It states: “Supportive but not conclusive scientific evidence suggests that eating about 1½ tablespoons (20.5 grams) daily of soybean oil, which contains unsaturated fat, may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.”

Thanks to the FDA’s recent authorization of soybean oil’s qualified health claim, consumers will begin seeing “heart healthy” labeling on bottles of soybean oil (also labeled as vegetable oil).
